Biden loses Obama the Catholic vote

I’ve often wondered how Catholics could elect Democrats in the last 40 years or so. That would seem to have been rendered a moot point this cycle, as Gerald Warner observes:

Missed it by THAT MUCH

Missed it by THAT MUCH

Remember, you read it here first: on September 11 this blog reported a mounting backlash from Catholic bishops against Biden, Barack Obama’s “Catholic” pro-abortion running mate. At that time I estimated eight bishops had come out to denounce Biden; the total is now 55. Beyond that, Biden is being trashed across every state of the Union by Catholic newspapers, TV and radio stations, and blogs. It is a tsunami of rejection.

The story has now hit the secular media. Last Saturday Time magazine asked: “Does Biden

The McGehee Hiatus Is Over (Apparently)

Kevin McGehee at the The McGehee Zone, fellow Swamp Stomper, had taken a bit of a sabatical for several weeks, complaining of “running dry”, and resorting to just posting once a week for a while.

That appears to be over.  Here’s my comment today on a piece he posted yesterday:

I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but this posting marked seven consecutive days of posting for the man who once said he was burned out on blogging!  I think that constitutes the end of the so-called hiatus.  Welcome back to the land of verbose, my friend!

Kevin is a sharp dude, a great writer of fiction from what I’ve been watching this summer, and a quick political wit.

Welcome back, man!…

Swamp Stomper Alert: Pelosi’s Pickens

Nancy Pelosi Flexing Her MusclesIn this weekend’s Wall Street Journal, there is a report of an investment made by Nancy Pelosi and her husband.

They put somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000 into T. Boone Picken’s company, Clean Energy Fuels Corp.

At first blush, the relatively small amount (compared to millions of dollars in assets held by the Pelosis) would make most consider this to be a non-issue.  And by House Rules this is evidently not a conflict of interest. And besides, everyone can see that Natural Gas and Wind Energy are the future of America, right?

That shows you how well our politicians police themselves.

$50,000, $100,000, these are not small sums of money.  Mrs. Pelosi may bandy about billions of our tax dollars with little thought, and …

From the Business and Media institute:

There’s a huge concern among conservative talk radio hosts that reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine would all-but destroy the industry due to equal time constraints. But speech limits might not stop at radio. They could even be extended to include the Internet and “government dictating content policy.”

FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell raised that as a possibility after talking with bloggers at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. McDowell spoke about a recent FCC vote to bar Comcast from engaging in certain Internet practices – expanding the

US House GOP Members Continue Fight To End Vacation

Allahpundit over at Hot Air brings us news that Republicans in the US House, who staged a dramatic protest Friday over the closing of business in Congress for a month while the Energy issue sits languishing, plan to continue this effort anew on Monday.  From House Republican Leader John Boehner’s office :

Washington, Aug 3 – House Republicans will be back on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives again Monday to continue the unprecedented protest that began last Friday, when dozens of Republicans joined hundreds of American citizens on the House floor to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) decision to send Congress home for the rest of the summer without a vote on legislation to lower gas prices and move America toward

Swamp Stomper Alert: Housing Bill Heads to White House

Well, it took almost 3 months, but Congress finally passed the bill today, on older version of which was  passed by the House in May, after some considerable back and forth between the Senate and the House.  The bill is HR 3221 (pdf), titled: “Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008”.

The entire bill is over 600 pages long.  The table of contents is 7 pages.  And technically, this is a bill that began its life over a year ago.  Sponsored by none other than Nancy Pelosi.  And apparently Bush is planning to sign.

He should not.

Touted by most of the media is the section that provides up to a $7,500 tax credit is 1,800 words.  And the  media manage to mention it …

New information reveals that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was indirectly sending messages to the FARC. The Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is designated as a terrorist group by the US government. Speaker Pelosi was doing this while at the same time she refused to bring a free trade agreement with Colombia up for a vote in the US House. In fact, Pelosi took extraordinary steps to block this trade agreement with America’s closest ally in South America.

So, here we have Pelosi …

Interesting Day

Just a few reflections on the day…

Politics:

News reports put Hillary ending her campaign on Friday or Saturday. As usual, I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s sad that Hillary has had such a hard time concluding her campain:

“We pledged to support her to the end,” said Representative Charles B. Rangel, a New York Democrat who has been a patron of Mrs. Clinton since she first ran for the Senate. “Our problem is not being able to determine when the hell the end is.”

Meanwhile, Ann Coulter (yes, I know that last time I mentioned her I was not very gracious) shares some valuable insights comparing Hillary’s complaints about popular votes vs. delegate votes, and comparing this situation to Al Gore’s …

Ann Coulter says it well, here:

Well, it looks like it’s the end of the road for Hillary. Time for her to pack up her pantsuits and go back to – wherever it is she’s pretending to be living these days. Now we just have to get rid of the other two. Perhaps if I endorse Obama

This week, Bill Clinton lost his second presidential election for a protege.

Ronald Reagan was so popular, he not only won a 49-state landslide re-election for himself, but he also won a symbolic third term
