Where Did We Miss?

Where Did We Miss?

Conservatives have lost our political credibility. We have totally squandered opportunity after opportunity over the years because self-interest and ambition have eroded the integrity of Conservative politicians along with Liberal ones. And blind political stupidity in the Republican Party created a mess of alienated constituencies, including African Americans. P.J. O'Rourke wrote in The Weekly Standard (aptly titled "We Blew It"):
An entire generation has been born, grown up, and had families of its own since Ronald Reagan was elected. And where is the world we promised these children of the Conservative Age? Where is this land of freedom and responsibility, knowledge, opportunity, accomplishment, honor, truth, trust, and one boring hour each week spent in itchy clothes at church, synagogue, or mosque? It lies in ruins at our feet, as well it might, since we ourselves kicked the shining city upon a hill into dust and rubble.
O'Rourke goes on to[...]
Which Way Should Conservatism Go? Well, How About We Try ‘toward Conservatism’?

Which Way Should Conservatism Go? Well, How About We Try ‘toward Conservatism’?

You’re going to hear quite a bit from the left over ‘the death of conservatism’ over the next few weeks. But they’ve got it wrong. I say, what we’ve got is the death of compromised conservatism as espoused by George W Bush, his father, GHW Bush, and by more recently, John McCain. This morning, we see a post from Helen Valois at Renew America, who calls this ‘conservative conservatism’. I can quibble with the name she chooses, but not her meaning…
What is conservative conservatism? It is a commitment to playing a good defense (or rather — except for the one, brief, shining moment of Governor Palin’s acceptance speech — a pretty flawed defense) when your opponents have gone decisively on the offensive. It is that which John McCain quintessentially represents — the recalcitrant[...]
Barack Obama and Morality

Barack Obama and Morality

I've spent the last week--this one leading up to the election next week--thinking about what it is about Barack Obama that really bothers me. I mean, he seems a likeable-enough guy, good-looking, even-tempered, well-spoken. I've read Charles Krauthammer's endorsement of John McCain, and of course, the editorials of my favorite conservatives at the Wall Street Journal, namely Daniel Henninger and Kimberly Strassel. But it was while watching the Dennis Miller piece on The O'Reilly Factor Wednesday night that clarified what it is about Obama that terrifies me. Barack Obama clearly doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, and his entire life story illustrates it. Barry's mother was from Kansas, and in his first campaign advertisements, he talked about how she gave him her "Midwestern values". Really? How do those values compare to two other notable Kansan's--Bob Dole and Dwight Eisenhower? When was the last time[...]

Robert Novak Retirement

I haven’t been keeping up with all of the big events lately as well as I’d like to… the energy thing has taken on a life of its own. You probably already know that Robert Novak has announced his immediate retirement after diagnosis of a brain tumor....

Why I’m Thankful to be a Conservative

It seems strange to be writing in this space again after what seems like an lengthy hiatus.  Two weeks of vacation, followed by a week of catching up.  And, as a result, admittedly out of touch. Barack’s puzzled?  Who knew?  He seems so confident, so, shall I...
