Congressional Conservationists Corraling Resources

Not that anyone should be shocked, but definitely frustrated, but today’s Washington Post provides some insight to the plans of Congress with regard to converting more and more land over to federal protection control.  You know what’s scary?  If this had been the approach Congress took when Thomas Jefferson was president, we’d still be all stuck on the east coast, the western 1/3 of the country would be part of Mexico, and everything from Ohio to the Rockies would still be under Indian control (well, maybe not) and undeveloped.  Oh, and we’d still be using outhouses.

The thinking is, Congress may set aside as many as 2 million additional acres in this year.

Wilderness areas, which have the strictest level of federal protection, account for

Hillary Clinton – Lost In Translation

I’ve got just one little point that I haven’t seen any comment as yet which I noticed while listening to a rebroadcast of last night’s debate between Clinton and Obama in Austin.

There was a question regarding having 2 languages spoken in the US (English and Spanish presumably). Here’s a transcript (courtesy of the Chicago Sun Times) of the question and the first part of Clinton’s answer (bold emphasis is mine):

RAMOS: (SPEAKING SPANISH) Right now, there are more than 30 million people in this country who speak Spanish.
(APPLAUSE)
Many of them are right here. By the year 2050, there will be 120 million Hispanics in the United States. (SPEAKING ENGLISH) Now, is there any downside, Senator Clinton, to the United States becoming, becoming

We Have a Winner for Contest #4!

Demosthenes is this week’s winner!

You may recall the question was:

Hypothetical question: If President Bush, Vice President Cheney, House Speaker Pelosi, Senate President Pro Tempore Byrd, Secretary of State Rice, Secretary of the Treasury Paulson, Secretary of Defense Gates, Attorney General Mukasey, Secretary of Interior Kempthorne, and Secretary of Agriculture Schafer were all killed, who (today) would be next in line to become President?

The answer is Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt. Only because both Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, whose Cabinet positions are next in line after Secretary of Agriculture Schafer, are ineligible. It is required that one succeeding to the Presidency fulfill the Constitutional prerequisites for the Presidency, which includes age, birth and …

It’s Not the End

I’ve read and heard a number of conservatives (and I myself have struggled with this) who appear to be giving up on this year’s elections already. I’m disappointed. Ann Coulter certainly exuded an extreme version of the conservative angst (although she’s definitely on the wrong track by suggesting Hillary is a viable alternative to McCain). However just as effective as Coulter’s idea of supporting Clinton are the following ideas:

  1. Vote for any candidate on the ballot other than McCain
  2. Don’t vote for any candidate for President
  3. Skip the election altogether

A man named Rick Warren penned these words in the book The Purpose Driven Life:

It’s not about you.

I think this applies here, with a few more words: “It’s not about the President, …

The State of the Union – No Response

I’m going to keep it simple.  Bush did a great job.  Clear well thought-out plans to address a number of our country’s current issues.  I’m sorry, and I know they’re paid to be Democrats and all, but do the Democrats had to act like they were just barely putting up with his presence?  Hillary looked like she was miserable.  Obama looked thoughtful (kind of like how Kennedy looked, except Ted looked like he was thinking about gas).   My opinion is that Congress needs to work with Bush on the recommendations he made for education, health care, military funding, elimination of earmarks, and holding down taxes.

What I really don’t get is, why the pathetic Democratic response?  Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of Kansas, had nothing concrete to …

Without Fred, What’s Next?

I’ve already read a number of strong and thought provoking comments around various blogs as people have anticipated (prior to yesterday’s announcement) and reacted to Fred’s departure from the race. There is significant support for Fred’s message, disappointment (and some outrage) over his announcement, and frustration that the remaining lot of Republican candidates leave much to be desired. What is a conservative voter to do?

Some have suggested other candidates. Those that would be happy to have anyone other than Hillary or Obama in office lean heavily toward one of the front runners, who I think are in the position they are in because of one of three things:

  1. Their elect-ability (I despise this reason)
  2. Their message appeals to many who are toward the middle

Where in the World is Fred Thompson?

We’ve had a number of hits on this site today that appear to be attempts by our fellow Fred-heads to find out what’s going on with Fred.  Does anyone know for sure?  I’m still hoping he stays in… Florida’s just around the corner!

Fred, please give us a sign!…

Huck Chucks His Integrity?

To a group in Myrtle Beach, did Mike Huckabee really say:

“You don’t want people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag,” Huckabee told an audience in Myrtle Beach. “If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell ’em what to do with the pole.”

?????

No, he could not have, could he? I’m reading this on just about every major news site… I’m flumaxed.  All of the back and forth I’m reading is about this being a racist comment, which is certainly not a big stretch, but I’ve got a bigger problem with the statement.  This is a patently offensive statement (due to the obvious unspoken innuendo) in any …

Open Thread for South Carolina Primary and Nevada Caucus

We will be posting comments here throughout the day today. I’ll be out off-line for a few hours, but will be back. Please feel free to leave comments here throughout today regarding the polling.

11:00 AM ET: Today is a big day. Sister Toldjah notes that the weather in South Carolina is wintry and may keep voting numbers down and that Ron Paul is getting as desperate as Kucinich has been by asking, at the last minute, for the Nevada Caucus to be delayed due to “inconsistencies”.

2:00 PM ET: Apparently based on exit polling only, NBC has declared Mitt Romney the winner in the Nevada Caucus. Ron Paul, who was the only Republican to do any serious advertising in Nevada, was second, …
