Which Way Should Conservatism Go? Well, How About We Try ‘toward Conservatism’?

Which Way Should Conservatism Go? Well, How About We Try ‘toward Conservatism’?

You’re going to hear quite a bit from the left over ‘the death of conservatism’ over the next few weeks. But they’ve got it wrong. I say, what we’ve got is the death of compromised conservatism as espoused by George W Bush, his father, GHW Bush, and by more recently, John McCain. This morning, we see a post from Helen Valois at Renew America, who calls this ‘conservative conservatism’. I can quibble with the name she chooses, but not her meaning…
What is conservative conservatism? It is a commitment to playing a good defense (or rather — except for the one, brief, shining moment of Governor Palin’s acceptance speech — a pretty flawed defense) when your opponents have gone decisively on the offensive. It is that which John McCain quintessentially represents — the recalcitrant[...]
Recent Milestones at TCR

Recent Milestones at TCR

Not that it's that big of a deal, but we hit 10,000 visitors sometime in early October... it took 11 months to hit that milestone. Today, we hit 15,000 visitors. 5,000 in the past month. I can't imagine what would cause so much interest in our site this past month. We also in the latter part of October posted our 500th article. We think that's just the tip of the iceberg, and hope to see significant growth as we develop The Conservative Reader over the next year. In noting these milestones, I just want to thank the writing team for TCR: Thomas Laryea, DJ Durant, Dr. Bob Stouffer, Renea Smith, and BitHead. You have[...]
The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace

The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace

The Wall Street Journal states the bloody obvious:
According to recent Gallup polls, the president’s average approval rating is below 30% — down from his 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Bush has endured relentless attacks from the left while facing abandonment from the right. This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, “Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust.” Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.
Rejected from the Democrats because that’s what the Democrats do. Reach out to them, they’ll break your arm… as Bush Sr found out. Remember[...]

The Iowa State House and Senate races are still not all settled at this writing. However, it appears that Democrats like have a majority in both houses again.
President Of The United States: Barack Obama

President Of The United States: Barack Obama

As I write this, John McCain is announcing his concession of today's election. Obama was declared the winner by most of the networks at around 11:00 PM Eastern Time. McCain's speech was kind and humble, and recognizing what is an historic event. We have not been shy in our opposition to Obama here at TCR, and hopefully have been and will continue to be faithful in this regard: Obama is the rightful victor, for whatever reason I believe is the man God will place in this leadership position, and will deserve the appropriate respect due the office and office holder of the Presidency. Assuming he does not abuse his power (a caution I would put to any who take this office). We will, however, continue to voice opposition to

Peter ran a good solid clean campaign. We look forward to his work in the State House. Congratulations, Peter!

News Organizations Different Projection Timings

News Organizations Different Projection Timings

NBC is calling Illinois before the polls are closed there... CNN is waiting. Different comments from the analysts, but personally I hate to see projections before polls are closed. Granted the projections are coming from exit polls, but as we've seen in past elections, early projections can impact late voter turnout, which can impact other races. The projections themselves are identical, which should be the case. We're watching CNN right now and monitoring[...]
CNN Gets A Technical First – A Live Hologram!

CNN Gets A Technical First – A Live Hologram!

Just now, Wolf Blitzer is talking with Jessica Yellin via, get this, Hologram. First time on live TV. I'm quite impressed with what they've accomplished here. Jessica is in Chicago and Wolf is in New York. The image was a little herky-jerky (that's a lot of data to transmit) from multiple cameras that were surrounding Jessica in a small tent. I don't know for sure if the image was actually projected onto the set or just merged digitally, but Wolf gave the impression that he was looking right at the image. And there was a red circle on the floor that appeared as if it could have been part of the projection aparatus. Bravo, CNN!

How I’m Going to Vote

How I’m Going to Vote

After two years, we finally get to pull the lever. I do not propose to get into specifics, here about what I’m going to do. I don’t suppose I will need to. You see, when I vote today, I’m going to remember which party made possible another vote recently, and which party decided fighting for freedom wasn’t worth it. I strongly suggest that you should, as well.

Addendum (Art): Great point, Bit. It's also great to see American's taking their right to vote this year as seriously as Iraqis do.
