constitution_thumb_295_dark_gray_bg.jpgThe Conservative Reader is exceptionally happy to read about 13 Des Moines, Iowa students from East High School who placed first in Iowa and went to Washington, DC to participate in the national finals for “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution”.  The event hosted 1,200 students from around the country.

The contest  had students demonstrate their knowledge and application of the Constitution by acting as expert witnesses in a simulated congressional hearing.

Students were scored on their opening statements and answers to follow-up questions posed by a panel of judges, who graded the them on understanding, constitutional application, reasoning, supporting evidence, responsiveness and participation.

It’s not only encouraging to hear about the 1,200 that went to Washington, but that there is such an organized program (this was the 21st such event).  This is exactly the kind of thing we need to promote and encourage our students to pursue.
