WALL-E: Political Non-Event, Fun For All

As mentioned the other day [1], we went to see WALL-E (which stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth Class [2]) Tuesday night.  Although the underlying message is clearly “Take Care Of The Earth”, I don’t think I was not led to see it as a “Global Warming” statement.

What I did see was the same kind of message we’ve been trying to teach each generation for the past 40 years or so, and that’s to be good stewards of the planet.  Frankly, we’d be in a much worse mess right now if not for the continued conservation efforts of the last several decades.

Certainly, we’re into a cycle of Political Correctness regarding being “green”, some of which is not so bad, some of which is a little extreme in my book.  And WALL-E is certainly timed well to coincide with a political crescendo on this topic, but again, I don’t see the conspiracy with the Global Warming fanatics.  I will probably go off on this particular topic another day, but we need to stop looking for Global Warming messages and start building a conservative agenda on caring for the planet.  Conservation is not a liberal agenda, far from it, but we’ve allowed libs to take the message away and repackage it and then turn it against business.  Right now conservatives look like idiots because all we’ve got are criticisms and no agenda.  I’m just saying.

So, aside from that, I thought it was a fun movie.  It’s essentially a children’s movie, G-Rated, and definitely fun for adults that don’t take themselves too seriously.  The story follows two robots (WALL-E and EVE) who meet on Earth, where WALL-E works (apparently by himself), and return to the space station EVE was sent from.  Earth went through some kind of catastrophe, which appears to have been caused less by disasters of convention thinking and more by excessive consumption, as demonstrated by the central governing corporation “Buy-N-Large”.  What appears to be New York City is teaming with piles of trash that scale up alongside the skyscrapers, and are being built up by WALL-E.  He is sort of a mobile trash compactor, creating cubes of compacted trash and building stacks of them the size of buildings.  As he is placing each block, I couldn’t help but hear the words “Just another brick in the wall”.

Anyhow, humans are in a space ship far away from earth in luxury accommodations, but after 700 years they’ve gotten lazy and extremely obese.  This provides us with the second message which is “take care of yourself”.  I think the message is timely, as we seem, on many fronts, to be developing more and more of an inactive lifestyle.  Although there are clearly a large number of people exercising these days, those who don’t really don’t.

The more I think about it, the inactive lifestyle of today extends to the world of intelligence and empowerment.  We are becoming more and more dependent on the government and other services to do the things we should do ourselves.  The more dependent we are, the less free we are.  Think about it.  If you can’t carry on without the government taking care of some aspect of your life, you no longer own it, the government does.  You’ve lost your liberty in that area.  Social Security, Health Care, Education; we could probably go on for a while.

Anyhow, the movie was great, the animation was fantastic, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

And when you see it, catch the credits and see who does the voice of the “Auto Pilot”.  I got a kick out of that.
